Real-time Student Monitoring System  (2024)

︎ CHI ’24
Data analysis & Writing

The abrupt transition to online teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic has presented numerous challenges for instructors in monitoring students in online classrooms. Through a formative study, we identified the critical need for monitoring tools that provide intuitive visualizations of real-time student engagement.

To address this need, we designed a prototype of the Real-time Student Monitoring System (RESMO) and conducted an evaluation study involving 20 instructors. The lab experiment compared the monitoring performance of instructors who used RESMO during online classes with those who did not.

Our results demonstrate using RESMO significantly improved the accuracy of engagement assessments and the flexibility in teaching strategies during the class. While the highly visible visualization of student engagement enhanced monitoring accuracy, it also impacted instructors' cognitive load and psychological pressure, particularly when students displayed low engagement.

Based on these results, we discuss implications for the design of monitoring assistance systems for online teaching.
