Aligning with the pivot to intersectionality and the epistemological turn that calls for researchers’ reflection on their own positionalities within the HCI community, we explore the intersectional struggles of non-Western HCI researchers.

[CHI EA ‘25] Through self-reflection, I explore how my own positionalities have shaped engagements with the LGBTQ+ community, the academic audience, and the research itself. We then triangulate my “stuckness” by incorporating the experiences of the research team, connecting contexts, and reflecting on the nature of researcher positionality.

By articulating the structural challenges of this non-Western Queer HCI researcher, this paper adds specific considerations, analytic lenses, and implications to calls for greater acknowledgment of researcher reflexivity.

[TBD] Building on this, we expand this reflexive approach with other non-Western researchers with diverse interests in the HCI community. We explore how they perceive their positionalities and navigate multi-layered “translation” labor throughout their research. We aim to discuss how our community highlights this invisible labor while fostering epistemic diversity and reflexivity.
